TALES FROM A PRISON CELL

Ábel Visky 2020. (documentary, 84′)

Can imagination set you free? Three imprisoned fathers write fairy tales for their children that will be turned into short films at a prison workshop. Awkward, yet full of tenderness, these films show how much prison can affect the lives of families, and how imaginary worlds can build bridges and help people reconnect.

THAT OTHER VILLAGE

Jadran Boban 2020. (documentary, 73′)

Hidden in the outskirts of Europe, nested between two mountains in Eastern Croatia, lays a village that changed twice its name, population and its own history. This village, that has two cemeteries, is immersed in numerous unspoken and conflicting memories passed on from generation to generation. Recollection of past inter-ethnic conflicts is being transformed as to forever keep a seed of future suffering, trauma and war. The village that used to be the home of two nations becomes a paradigm of a vicious circle of mutual feelings of injustice and generalization of guilt, forever trapped in condensed historical traumas of the 20th century. Through conversations with members of both ethnic groups, an unknown chasm opens in front of the viewer. Fluent and contradictory, these seemingly authentic personal memories are strongly shaped by collective ethnicity. In times of major social crises, they will again serve as a trigger for new conflicts.

the party

Bojan Mrđenović, 2018. (documentary-experimental, 10′)

Are humans submissive to crowds and do they hide in the anonymity of party clubs? The film takes us to the most popular party beach on the Mediterranean Sea – Zrće on the island of Pag. Streams of people are pouring down to Zrće from all over the world in search of adventure and sex. The Party takes us into the zones of intimacy within the dynamics of the crowd. This temporary setup of amplified emotions is a natural boost for a parallel reality which is developing at the beach throughout the night.

OUR DAILY WATER

Vlatka Vorkapić, 2018. (documentary, 57′)

Croatia has 718 islands and 467 cliffs. 67 islands are inhabited. 9 of them have direct access to drinking water. Many islands are dependent of water carrier ships. Our Daily Water is a Mediterranean comedy about one of these ships and its crew. The Captain’s young nephew joins the crew for the first time and the battle of generations begins. But, this is not the only battle at sea. The Captain is faced with an ongoing struggle with bureaucracy and bad management. Arrogant tourists that do not appreciate the value he is bringing, are a special kind of enemy. They do not understand that, without that ship, they too would not have water on their fancy yachts and islands marines. The Captain is aware of the treasure his ship is carrying, but the other protagonists of this story start to realise the value of water only when they are left without it.

REVOLUTION POSTPONED

Vlatka Vorkapić, 2018. (documentary, 71′)

In most post-communist countries, transition from communism to capitalism was practically relaying on elites ripping off the country, but always under the same flagship of “sacrifice”. The consequences of bad decisions are always left for the people to deal with. Times are coming to settle the score. But, all we do is wait. Some wise man once said: We are the ones we are waiting for.
